Notes for George Guild Pine

[slade.FTW]
George was a sensitive and gentle person by many accounts and very intelligent. Sometimes people would take advantage of him due to his kind nature. George graduated from Walton High School in 1935 and attended Albany Business College where he studied accounting for one year. From 1940-1942 he worked as a punch press operator at Sidney Magneto Co., Sidney, NY, and stamped out parts for magnetos out of metal plates. George enlisted in the Army as a Pfc. December 2, 1942 and was discharged on February 19, 1946 at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. His title was clerk/typist and he performed a variety of clerical and typing duties for the administrative branch of a hospital center. He used a typewriter to prepare mimeographs, stencils, reports, and military correspondence. He typed 50 words per minute. He served overseas for 9 months in the European Theater of Operations. Army Serial Number 32 663 996.
He became involved with alcohol and spiraled downward after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. He had written several bad checks in Walton at one time and shortly after was admitted to a mental hospital where he spent the next 40 some odd years of his life. Its wondered if he became an alcoholic because of the war and the experiences he had there as a medic. With schizophrenics they hear voices and can be delusional. His two marriages both ended in divorce. He had no children.
Niece Tina Horton Pabst recalls her Uncle George visiting from the hospital. He was hard tocommunicate with and constantly talked to himself out loud, answering those voices. At times he would leave the mental hospital, get on a bus, then call us to pick him up. His sister Judy was always afraid he would smoke in bed and burn the house down when he visited. In later life he was admitted to a nursing home with chronic kidney failure and there he died in Danbury, Conn.
