Charles L. Bagley was the son of William "Wild Bill" Bagley and Mary Leland Bagley. William died in Center Twp, Cedar Co. when Charles was 30 years old. He was successful in many areas of his life. He appears in Who's Who of California, Vol. 5, 1969-73. Most of our immediate family was aware of the fact that Charles practiced law in Los Angeles, and I know the my father visited this cousin there at his office at 408 S. Spring Street. When he retired as Vice-President of the American Federation of Musicians of the U.S. and Canada on April 1, 1961, the following was written in their publication.
· It is quite impossible in an article of this nature to do justice to the rich and varied career of our retiring Vice-President, Charles Leland Bagley. After his school days in Tipton, Iowa, where he was born on April 24, 1873, and after several years work as a photographer, he matriculated at the College of Law, University of Southern California, and on July 23, 1909, was admitted to the Bar. After graduating and taking a post-graduate course which rated him his Master of Laws, he began practice in the Fall of 1911. His Musical record is as varied as his legal career. From 1887 he played successively with the Silver Cornet Band in Santa Ana, with the Crown City Band of Pasadena, and with the Pasadena Grand Opera House Orchestra. In Los Angeles he was a member of a symphonic ensemble, "The Philharmonic," then, for twenty years from 1897, of the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra. For about a quarter of a century, he played in Los Angeles theaters. Mr. Bagley was a member of what is now Local 47, Los Angeles, when it was organized in October 30, 1894, and was still called Local 19 of the National League of Musicians. By 1896, he was serving as a member of its Board of Directors. The local was chartered March 15, 1897, and he is one of its two living charter members. He was Secretary of Local 47 from 1902 5o 1910, its President from 1911 to 1913, its Vice-President from 1918 to 1922, and its Attorney for over thirty years. In 1931 he was elected Vice-President of the Federation. Mr. Bagley ended the notes on his interesting career by stating that if he goes to the Seattle Convention this summer--his health permitting--he will have attended forty-eight A.F. of M. Conventions and one of the National League, this in 1904, at which he made the motion to adjourn sine die, which was the end of the National League.
Another source of information on Charles, came from Mrs. Allace Getchell of Minneapolis. She corresponded with him in 1960, and was kind enough to send copies of those two letters. She was inquiring about the Bagley genealogy, which she has always had an interest in. In one letter, he tells anecdotes of his father, William Harold Bagley. William fought in the Civil War and saw brief service with the Army of General Sherman when he started on his famous march to the sea in 1864 but was injured and a year after was discharged in Columbus, Ohio, unfit for service. He lived in a small town of Deaverton, Ohio as a youth and is a son of Samuel Bagley, Simeon's brother who stayed in Ohio, and his wife Mary Jones. A little investigation showed that William served in the 88th OH Infantry as a Volunteer and the 31st OH Infantry. He was buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Cedar Co. in lot 373, gr#1, row 15 on the 23 of January, 1903.
