where Simeon settled the town of West Liberty
Elder S. A. Bagley, son of Samuel, was born in Grafton Co., NH April 26, 1798. He was raised and educated in Sharon, VT and was married on the 19th day of August, 1819 to Miss Almira Latham in the town of Royalton, VT where they lived six years when they
emigrated to Athens Co., OH, where he lived nine years. In Oct. 1838, he removed with his family from Ohio to North Liberty, Iowa Territory (at the time) , Muscatine Co. This town, he and his brother William platted building log cabins in the woods,
til they could clear and built the streets of the town. Later, several cousins followed from Ohio, Eliza Bagley, Nancy Morrow, his sister, wife of Jacob Morrow, the Chesebro's, and all of William's children.
In 1844 he removed to Cedar County and settled on a farm where he lived for 6 years, when he moved his residence to the town of Tipton, where he died.
Elder Bagley embraced the Christian religion in the 18th year of his age and united with the Christian Church in the town of Sharon, VT. He was a minister, when he emigrated to Iowa he and his pious companion went into an organization of a Christian Church in Moscow, Muscatine Co. This was the first Church he was ordained by Elders, Baker and Beardsley. Here he assisted in the Organization of a Conference, the first within the territory, then known by the name of the Iowa Christian Conference. Elder Bagley continued his ministerial labors among the churches of which this conference was composed, receiving little material aid for his services and laboring with his own hands for the support of his family. He was very punctual in the attendance of every annual conference until his death.
At the organization of a Christian Church at York Prairie, seven miles from Tipton, Elder Bagley and his wife with some of their children composed part of the organization. He died suddenly of apoplexy (stroke) Dec. 3, 1873 in the presence of his wife a family, expiring about 15 minutes after the attack in the 75th year of his life.
Signed by James Williamson.
Page 526: "In 1830 Simeon A. Bagley and Enos Barnes formed a partnership in the blacksmithing and wagonmaking business. Barnes purchased James Hare's lot. In 1831 they built a brick shop on the lot now occupied by J.R. Milligan's residence. This shop was about fifty feet long, twenty wide and one story high, with a brick partition through the centre, making two rooms, one for a wagon shop and the other for blacksmithing. Soon after they had everything in good working order, the shop with all its contents was destroyed by fire. Bagley then sold his property and left (Brandon) the place."
Page 460: S.A. Bagley, a wagon maker, settled near the south county line in 1838; moved to Center Township in 1844. and to Tipton in 1849.
Page 461: He advertised in the first issue of the Cedar County Advertiser, on Nov. 12, 1853, as did Shaw and Bagley, general merchants. That latter business was a partnership with Alonzo Shaw and Harry and George Bagley. They sold out in 1855 and bought a corner lot, constructing a three-story brick building in 1857.
Page 481: Three steam mills were built and incorporated in 1850. Among the stockholders were Henry Bagley, Simeon A. Bagley, George Bagley, and others. The mills foundered for lack of water. In August, 1854, Henry Bagley, then of Tipton, now of Mechanicsville, took the mill in charge and dug a large mill pond west of the mill, by which a constant supply was received through a quick-sand stratum. In 1855, the mill was sold to Stout and Shearer..."
