Notes for Edgar Gray Swingle

Edgar graduated from Newark High School, Newark, Ohio. He entered Wittenberg, College at Springfield, Ohio.
While in College, he wasEditor President of the Press Club and of the Literary Society. He was captain of the debating team, manager of the Glee Club, Vice President of the Y.M.C.A., and President of the Athletic Association. Edgar was a member of two fraternal organizations.
Even though he enlisted in the service in early May 1917, he still received his diploma from Wittenberg. He was in Company B of the 6th Engineers. He landed in France for combat duty on December 24, 1917. He was killed in action trying to rescue a commrade during the battle of Picardy on March 28, 1918. Sgt Swingle was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously by General Pershing. He had died within enemy lines.
The Gary Swingle history award was maintained for several years by his mother in the Newark High School. He was also Memorialized by a bronze tablet in the school.
