Active volunteer Petznick dies

Well-know Creston business owner, vounteer and community leader Ken Petznick died Wednesday at the age of 87.

Petznick, born and raised in Union County, graduated from Creston High School in 1930.
He and his wife Leona owned and operated Petznick Printing. Co. from April 1934 to January 1971 when the business was purchased by Ed Ritter.
"He was here regularly working until about three years ago," said Ritter. Leona is still here every day. The church, Kiwanis and this business were their life."
Ritter said it's hard to talk about Ken without Leona.
"They were a couple," Ritter said. "They would have been married 65 years on Valentine's Day."
The Petznicks were married Feb. 14, 1934. They started their printing business two months later and worked together nearly every day with the exception of three years while Ken served in the Army during World War II.
Ken and Leona shared the Creston Chamber of Commerce 1990 Volunteer Leadership award.
Hew was a "llife member" of Creston Kiwanis Club and VFW.
Ken had been a member of Creston Kiwanis 53 years with 52 years of perfect attendance.
"Ken alway made up missed meetings," Ritter said. "He even attended Kiwanis meetings while on vacation. He would find a meeting somewhere every month."
Petznick was a past Kiwanis president and seved as secretary for 31 years.
"He was named outstanding secretary by the Nebraska-Iowa District Kiwanis every one of those years," said Ritter.
Jack Keuter, Kiwanis Club president, said Petznick knew the history of the Kiwanis.
"Thae past several years he was our archives," said Keuter. "He knew all the by-laws and whatever else we needed. He was Mr. History."
Petznick was a former trestee, elder and Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church and active with the Christmas Basket fund.
"As I understand it, Ken and Leona were among the founders of the Christmas Basket in the early '50s," said Arvid Huisman, Creston news Advertser publisher and member of the Christmas Basket board of directors. "They were Mr. and Mrs. Christmas Basket until the early '90s."
When the Petznicks decided to "retire," Ken remained on the Christmas Basket board.
"We'll miss him," said Keuter.

Kenneth K. Petznick, 87, 612 N. Pine Street, died Feb. 10, 1999, at Greater Community Hospital. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at Graceland Cemetery with military rites conducted by Theodore J. Martens VFW Post No. 1797. The Rev. Terry Amann will officiate the service. There is open visitation 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home, 809 W. Montgomery Street. Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church or Children's Christian Home in Council Bluffs.
Mr. Petznick was born April 16, 1911, in Union County to Bruno and Elsie (McKee) Petznick. He graduated from Creston HighSchool in 1930. On Feb. 14, 1934, he married Leona Kaster in Moravia. He owned and operated Petznick Printing from 1934 to 1970 and continued to work there until his retirement in 1992. He was a lifelong Union County resident.
He was a former trestee, president, elder, treasurer and Sunday School teacher at the First Presbyterian Church; past president, secretary for 31 years and had a perfect attendance for 51 years with the Creston Kiwanis Club, received the Creston Chamber of Commerce Volunteer Award and was active with the Christmas Basket Fund. He was a World War II veteran, servicng with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Petznick of Creston and a sister, the Rev. Erna Petznick of Springfirld, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold, and Harley Petznick.[Thomas Pine Petznick.FTW]
