1870
Thompson, Sullivan County, New York census record for the Smith Pine
family. According to the Pine family Bible, Smith Pine died in
1874, however the census record shown here does not list his name.
It lists his wife/widow Mary Newman Pine and three of his children;
Norman, Rachel and Mariah Pine. Mary's age is incorrectly
listed as 44, although it would have been 76 at the time. Their
daughter Mary was born in 1823 and died in 1824, so it could not be her. |

Newman S. Pine - b:
March 27, 1816 - d: March 15, 1891 |
My 2nd great-grandfather,
Newman S. Pine, one of eleven children, was born in Orange
County, New York, later moving to Sullivan
County with his
family. His father was Smith Pine and his mother was Mary Newman (May 8, 1793 -
unknown). According to the obituary
of Archibald D. Pine, Newman and his father went west in
the gold rush of 1849, where they were successful in finding
gold. He married Harriet Caroline Varnell (September
4,1826 - May 18,1887). The family tree page of
the Pine Family Bible lists
Newman and Harriet as having seven children; Amanda,
Archibald, Lewis, George, Ida, Nettie, and Hattie. The
History of Cass County Iowa
lists his father's name as James, however it is believed
that James was his grandfather's name. |
